These two problems are interlinked, you know.

It is true that if 90% of the human race were to die now, there would remain 790,000,000 humans. And on this overstressed planet, 790 million is a better idea than any kind of billion.

In fact, 79 million would be better, and historically (way back when) there were times when it is believed there were fewer than 7 million people on the planet. This is about as close to extinction the human race is likely to achieve.

Although right now there are some technologies and potential problems that really might completely extinguish the human race. Some pestilence that starts off with the term “nano — ”

Or perhaps it starts with “Global nuclear — ”

What I do know is that here in Panama there are about four million people. And we’re doing okay.

Panama is self-contained. If everybody else on Earth were to die tomorrow, we could carry on. And we’re such a tiny country. How could we spread out and repopulate the world? We probably wouldn’t try. We don’t have huge climate problems here, and also if we went out there we’d have to contend with unattended nuclear power plants and weapons.

No thank you. Let the nukes melt. May the radiation not migrate to Panama.

I’m a university-trained environmental scientist. The greatest problem in communication to the public, beyond the disinformation being constantly spread by Big Oil, is the problem of making the math understandable. That’s what I’ve tried to do in this article: make it possible for the public to see the various relative numbers that are making so much trouble for mankind.

Readers — I’m not trying to terrorize you. But these are real problems that can’t be sugar-coated.

Climate Conscious wouldn’t publish this story, and I sort of understand that. But whether it’s optimism or denial, I think people need to be shaken up a bit. I found articles from renowned scientists and linked them early in the story so you won’t think I’m working in the dark.
