Dear President Biden and Vice-President Harris

As chief law enforcement for the federal government, of course you’re going to get requests to pursue the ICE agents who deported babies to Port-au-Prince. Whether you send the ICE agents to Haiti too, or just an American prison, either would do.

Since you both have prosecuting experience and authority this should not be a huge problem, though we all know that your jobs themselves are huge . . . projects.

Which is why I’ll stop right there and give you some happy news. I’m a U.S. citizen now living in Panama for almost a year. Panama, like much of the world, is heavily influenced by American culture and government. I’ve seen great improvements in the economy here just in the past few weeks, and a lot of faith in the future. I’ve been telling my neighbors for months now that things are going to get a lot better here with the changes happening in the U.S. And it is amazing. There were so many construction projects that stopped dead in early 2020, but now they are pouring concrete and stacking cement blocks. Neighbors congregate every night and everybody is much happier.

So I thank you on behalf of Panamanians. We are also sensitive to racism here: U.S. racism I mean. It’s impossible to be racist here except perhaps for the few of us who are white, though I haven’t noticed anything more than a bit of wariness from some citizens. That is no burden to bear. The talking heads on CNN in America are all different colors these days, but if you listen they all sound the same. Hmm, they must all be Homo sapiens, like the rest of us…

Thank you for all you’re (plural) doing, on behalf of Panamanians and myself . . . Fred Ermlich, Panama, 02–09–2021
